DESIGNER Ben de Lisi has been in the fashion business long enough not to be fazed by passing fads or flavours of the month.

He's a household name whose couture gowns are a favourite of A-listers including Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter, and has his own successful high street range.

Ben has also been a mentor to dozens of aspiring designers on the TV show Project Catwalk, which aims to find new British talent.

With such an impressive pedigree, it's hardly a surprise that he's not worried about the competition from "celebrity" fashion collections - but he is scathing of those stars who don't seem to take it seriously.

Ben said: "Principles was Britain's answer to Banana Republic. It was a really big brand and it lost it's way, as companies do sometimes when the parent company gets into financial difficulties. Fortunately I had the confidence of Debenhams and they bought it for me. It was a very easy decision to make to work with them.

"It's been very successful across the board but especially in Scotland.

"There's a consumer out there who doesn't want over-handled, over-designed things and the Principles collection has a very understated, chic, reliable signature to it.

"People are fashion-savvy now. They want their clothes to be versatile and not one-season wonders.

"My collections have always been that way and now that I've taken over Principles I've brought that philosophy there too.

"So it's beautifully cut clothes, very well priced, beautifully made, with a fashion feel to it.

"Trends last for a season but style lasts forever."

Ben still has a high-end couture business and makes one-off red-carpet dresses and private commissions.

These stunning but expensive gowns will be worn to the Oscars and high-society weddings - but Ben says there is no real difference between the women he creates these dresses for and those shopping on the high street for a more affordable wardrobe.

He said: "The couture customer wants understated glamour, understated chic, while the Principles customer wants understated quality.

"She doesn't want it to be overtly trendy. She knows exactly who she is, what she wants, what looks good on her."

Britain's latest trendsetter, Kate Middleton, is someone who seems to sum up Ben's fashion ethos.

She has model looks but has shied away from anything too on-trend, prefering to stick to what she knows suits her.

Part of her appeal for fashion watchers is the way she mixes designer buys with her high street favourites.

"It's nice to get the press accolades but I just want my clothes to be worn.
