The Assistance League of Saddleback Valley has honored 17 high school seniors from its Assisteens auxiliary during its annual senior recognition event at the Newport Beach Marriott. The teens were honored for volunteering more than 4,000 hours in the last year and supporting the league's philanthropic programs. SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY

Mission Viejo residents Hugh Marley, a retired colonel of the Indian Army, and his wife Ruth Marley celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May. The couple was married in St. Xavier's Church in India and has five sons and two daughters. All sons have served in the U.S. Army. MERIT SCHOLARS

Eun Soo Park from Capistrano Valley High School has won a National Merit University of Southern California Scholarship. Brian Gallenstein of Trabuco Hills High School was awarded a National Merit Worcester Polytechnic Institute Scholarship. The students are two of about 8,300 high school seniors who received National Merit Scholarships for college undergraduate study worth nearly $35 million.

HONORED EMPLOYEES

Preschool teacher Victoria Lloyd and custodian Eddie Gardea, both of Ladera Ranch Elementary School, won 2011 Classified Employees of the Year awards from the Capistrano Unified School District. They were two of six non-teaching staff honored by the district, out of 123 nominated people. The six winners will represent the district in the Orange County Office of Education Classified School Employee of the Year program next year.

LEGION THANKS ALBERTSONS

American Legion Post 862 Commander Bill Cook has honored Albertsons grocery store in Rancho Santa Margarita for its support of the legion's Memorial Day Poppy Program. Store manager Amanda Woods received a certificate of appreciation from the legion for allowing the group to set up at store entrances and the store also donating some materials. The traditional poppies honor fallen and deceased veterans and donations received during the Poppy Program go to the American Legion relief fund.
