Lexington, KY - Lexington, KY - There is an old English adage about a man sent out to gather leaves of the borage plant from his wife's garden. The man plucked the broad, fuzzy leaves, merrily munching on the herbs on his walk back home. It wasn't until he was in his hospital bed that his wife discovered he had gathered and ingested the leaves of the foxglove plant – a highly poisonous plant with foliage quite similar to that of the borage. "Thousands of years of precedence have kept your standard food plants separate from the ornamental garden, but there is no real reason not to intermingle the two. John Michler, of Michler's Garden and Greenhouses, suggests when incorporating edibles into a flower garden, "You want to select plants that will be good neighbors to each other. Plants which will not only flourish well together, but also ones that look striking next to each other." Many varieties of herbs, vegetables, greens and flowers can appease both the eyes and the taste buds. Following are some suggestions for simple, deliciously edible plants to try in your garden.
While planning your garden this spring, there is no need to sacrifice beauty for practicality. No matter what type of foods you fancy, the kitchen gardener can find plenty of ornamentals to appease the eyes all season long. Try incorporating some organic practices in lieu of pesticides; as the old adage teaches, one must be careful not to be poisoned by their own garden.

Also known as the Jerusalem artichoke, this hardy perennial is easy to grow and typically resistant to disease. They can grow up to 10 feet tall, with bright yellow blossoms similar to the sunflower which bloom in the late summer.
