In the last week I’ wedding dcor wedding dcorve been in the South of France for the Hyères Fashion Festival and in San Francisco to meet students at the Academy of Art University, with a stop in New York for the opening of the Alexander McQueen exhibition. What links these places is not just fashion, but the design process itself and how the ideas of designers evolve over time. That evolution is one of the pleasures of Andrew Bolton’s selections for the McQueen show, especially in the tailoring choices. It was inspiring to see how his cutting methods changed over his career, yet how certain assumptions remained fixed. One of the most rewarding and maddening of these assumptions is that design is a learning process. And McQueen always wanted to learn.

Not surprisingly, he was also a great teacher. “Lee was the greatest teacher I ever had,” said Simon Ungless, who teaches design at the Academy of Art, and I suspect is something of a tough taskmaster. Students together at Saint Martins in London, Mr. Ungless helped McQueen with some of his earliest shows. “I learned more from him at Saint Martins than I learned from anyone at school,” he said.
This month, design schools are releasing graduates into the wild of the fashion industry. Many will get jobs, and this generation seems to want to work for large companies rather than start their own labels. That makes sense, given the power of global brands and the difficulty of obtaining capital, but it may also reflect a lack of creative urgency.
