Now well known on the fashion scene as a catwalk from which many a top designing career is launched, the School of the Arts show was typically full of courageous and colourful creations, all conjured up in students’ minds.

The designs in the catwalk shows, which attracted thousands of visitors yesterday afternoon and evening , came from 24 selected students from fashion, textiles for fashions, footwear and accessories courses.

Meanwhile, other students were given the chance to exhibit their work at the Northampton Museum & Art Gallery designer summer dresses 2012 designer summer dresses 2012, where it will be on show until July 17.

Catwalk designs this year included bright colours, loud prints and every material from cotton to leather and wool. But who won the awards?

Thom Neal won the Handels Banken prize for creative use of leather and fabric, while Lois Addison won the Joseph Cheaney & Sons award for footwear design.

Other graduate winners included Gemma Darby, Kelly Bull, Simona Maccario, Harriet Pearse and Dorcas Phillips.

One of the winners, 24-year-old Vicky Fallon, from the BA fashion design course, has also been named designer of the month with the Sketch Consultancy and Arts Thread who will be using her illustrations as part of their stand at the New Designers Show in London.

Vicky’s collection included printed velvet and silk and was based around the idea of childhood nostalgia.

Through the work I did not resolve my fear but it made me realise I’m definitely still scared of them. It was weird at the beginning but then I did get used to seeing the pictures of them.”

Designs showcased by fellow students were equally inventive in inspiration.

Natasha Worrall, aged 21, a textiles for fashion student, based her collection on artwork created by her four-year-old brother James.

She explained: “ 2012 Prom Dresses, Prom Dresses, Designer Prom gowns, Quinceanera Dresses, Bridesmaids Dresses, Bridal Dresses, Formal Occasion dresses;The collection is called His Name is James and is based on my little brother’s drawings. Meanwhile, fashion student Bethany Clarke, aged 20, used her home county of Cornwall as the inspiration for her collection.

She said: “I’m from Cornwall and moving here it was the first time I had moved away. I found it very interesting to hear all the stereotypes that came through. It is seen as a holiday destination but I feel it is home. Tourists don’t really have time to see all the smaller details.”

The idea behind Gemma Darby’s knitwear and print fashion collection all stemmed from the hotel where she once worked.
